Weekly Log

  • Week of March 19
    • Asked the staff and students about any new problems.
      • Staff requested tutorials on basic computer issues
    • Decided that we still need a viable solution to the document storage problem.
    • Looked into content filtering, both options seemed overly expensive
    • Fixed template problem in Microsoft Word on computer 6.
  • Week of March 26
    • Established times for tutorials next week
      • We can give the tutorials at our normal arrival times
      • 10-15 minute tutorials topics:
        • Flash drives
        • Firefox navigation/Basic web-browsing techniques
        • Shared file space on the network
        • Anti-virus, spyware detectors, and automatic updating
          • "Random" shutdowns that occur
  • Week of April 2
    • Montessori spring break
    • All hands meeting held
      • Discussed wireless possibilities in depth
    • Planned material for tutorial
  • Week of April 9
    • Gave tutorials
      • Discussed the changes we had made and why
        • Installed AdAware and Spybot to remove spyware
        • Installed Mozilla Firefox
          • To prevent more spyware from being installed
            • No ActiveX
            • Pop-Up Blocker
          • Allow for a smoother browsing experience
            • Tabbed browsing
            • Embedded search bar
      • Discussed safe internet browsing techniques and how to use new software
        • Do not click excessively because interactive advertisements can lead to spyware
        • Read approval windows when something is about to be downloaded, only say OK if you know exactly what is being downloaded
        • Allow updates to happen
          • Automatic shutdowns are due to Windows Update
          • AdAware and Spybot are good, don't worry if they automatically come up
    • Tested Network Folder
      • Worked as desired, ready for tutorial on Thursday
  • Week of April 16
    • Gave tutorials to a couple of students who were not there last week
      • Told students to move their work to the network drive
      • Documents on Desktops would be moved to "Unsorted" folder on the network soon
    • Set Microsoft Word's default save location to the network folder
    • Looked at internet problems in Science room
      • Antiquated router was unfamiliar, and given the limited time we were not able to do anything
  • April 23-27
    • Students were in Washington, DC
    • No further tasks to complete without students there, so we did not visit
